Design Cardiff - Welsh Wonder

When actor John Barrowman moved into Cardiff, it made a star of the city as well as the man. Barrowman is better known to fans of the BBC Two show Torchwood as Captain Jack. Torchwood and Dr Who are two crucial elements to the man’s success, in his career design, Cardiff plays a leading role. Barrowman was born in Scotland, raised in America and now lives in Cardiff with homes in London. He told the BBC: “At the moment, I'm spending all my time in Cardiff. My partner is in London with his job and so he comes to Cardiff on the weekends…I'm a huge fan of the city. The people are lovely - we have never had any complaints when we're filming in people's neighbourhood or when we close down their road. The city is hugely proud of the series and we're very proud to be there.”

Design: Cardiff is a Welsh Wonder

It seems Cardiff has been designed to be home to the world of media, culture, art and spectacular design - Cardiff has the beautiful Millennium Centre that has become a popular feature of the city. In fact, Barrowman sang there recently, and has become a regular local celebrity appearing in the recent Cardiff Pride festival. It isn’t just the architecture, culture and design Cardiff has that means the city is close to Barrowman’s heart - it’s the place he decided to conduct his own civil partnership ceremony.

Celebrity Designs on Cardiff

The performer has been spending most of his time in Cardiff, and has a home in Cardiff Bay, as well as the US. And its clear Barrowman has his designs set on Cardiff: “I am in Cardiff 90% of the time now,” he said. The city’s appeal is thanks to its duality - historic architecture sits next to modern design, Cardiff has one of the best shopping districts, boasting sophisticated bars, restaurants and nightlife. “I love Cardiff,” Barrowman was quoted as saying on the BBC. “During the day it's bustling like any major city but come six it all quietens down and it's like living in the country.” He’s even recently adopted a dog from Cardiff Dogs Home after opening a new kennel and falling in love with a Jack Russell.

Barrowman told the Western Mail: “During my visit, I fell in love with a 12-week-old Jack Russell terrier who was recently abandoned in an empty flat in Cardiff. I have now adopted the little fella, ‘Captain Jack’, as part of our family.”
