THE SOUND OF SURPRISE IN POWYS SCHOOLS FOR 2005

Following the success of 2004’s primary school project Junior Jazz, Brecon International Festival Of Jazz takes new music to the secondary schools of South Powys in 2005 with an innovative outreach project called The Sound Of Surprise.

From composing, directing and rehearsing through to a performance at the Festival itself, local musician and teacher John Paul Davies is currently leading over 100 students on a unique journey through the soundscapes of contemporary jazz.

Participants in The Sound Of Surprise comprise young musicians from Brecon, Gwernyfed, Builth Wells, Llandrindod Wells, Crickhowell and Maesydderwen High Schools.

Funded by the Arts Council Of Wales, Barclays Bank and Brecon Beacons National Park, this innovative new project further establishes the Festival’s commitment to expanding the range of arts available to the youth of the surrounding area.

Last year, over 180 junior schoolchildren attended workshops led by John Paul Davies and 22 A-Level students worked with jazz star Dennis Rollins.
