Background

Dan Porter’s eponymous bar is Cardiff's newest drinking den. As a still young (though now retired) actor, Dan hoped this leap from one ridiculous profession to another (host at his own bar) will provide him with the happiness and stability he has been missing all of his professional life. Though inexperienced and terrified, he and co-conspirator David used their combined knowledge of the arts and event experience to create a unique style of entertainment and customer service-led venue.

Porter’s has entertainment and good times at its heart; Dan describes his vision as ‘old fashioned but inherently cool’, it’s a place for a cosy drink or a roaring knees up. With its own adjoined theatre (The Other Room) and a stage by the bar where patrons are open to gather and have a merry sing-a-long around the ‘ol joanna. Porter’s is an unpretentious, welcoming and familiar home for like minded people of Cardiff, frequented not only by actors, arts-types, drama students and theatre lovers but anyone looking for good old-fashioned fun and a good drink.

Enter, moi

The overarching style and feel were influenced by bars Dan had visited, notably in both Berlin and New York. The aim was to create a house style that could accent a uniquely humoured personality and tongue-in-cheek tone, reflecting the feel of the establishment. It needed to be simple enough to let the venue do the talking but also to echo a meeting of old-fashioned charm and a contemporary twist of idiosyncratic styling.

We created an identity that harks back to bars and taverns found hidden behind doors, opening to a warm, fuzzy world of good times and hazy memories. Customised Fraktur letterforms and a bespoke 'P' give the Porter’s wordmark a distinct styling with a dramatic, theatrical flair. The 'P' icon becomes a shorthand version of the identity used across various touchpoints and is an enduring and recognisable symbol across the city.

All about the base

The brand was applied to a breadth of materials; from advertising, signage, a drum skin, bar runners, signage, crockery, advertising, aprons and even popcorn bags. The message accentuates the eccentric experience of a night of frivolity as Porter’s guest. Benjamin Franklin once said ‘‘There cannot be good living where there is no good drinking’’, Porter’s view is simply ‘‘good people, good times’’.

Porter’s has thrice been voted amongst the UK’s best places to drink by readers of the Observer Food Monthly and awarded ‘Best Watering Hole’ by Cardiff Life Magazine.
