Blackwater Gallery

Contemporary art space

Background

So named after Cardiff dock’s storied history of coal soot-tainted water, Blackwater is a modern and contemporary art gallery set overlooking the bay area. Dedicated to supporting and developing the work of both emerging and acclaimed, established artists, with a vision to build a platform and showcase their work internationally.

Opening with a showcase of eighteen curated international artists, Blackwater looks to expand not only the reputations of the artists but also the way in which people see galleries in general. Their ethos is to reach to a broad demographic with exhibits designed to help people realise the availability of quality work. The brief therefore was to develop a distinct visual identity and website that could flex with their space, themes and collections.

As a new modern and contemporary art gallery we needed to stand out from the crowd and to be noticed internationally. LGT have built our new gallery into a brand which embraces our whole ethos and everything we stand for. We can’t wait to see where our ongoing creative relationship will take us. Below the surface

The site was developed to bring the gallery’s artwork to the fore. Subtle details including a HTML5 canvas watery ripple effect on the home page banner plus segmented subscription lists allow users to keep updated with news from preferred artists.

With the site being predominantly an online gallery of sorts with a small e-commerce offering, we combined two platforms; a Concrete5 CMS manages the bulk of the site’s content whilst Shopify is used to organise and sell works. This approach gives the client the ‘best of both worlds’; a feature-rich content management system combined with a powerful e-commerce solution, a seamlessly fused user experience.
